SPOT is a virtual reality tool developed to measure object identification performance in patients with peripheral or central vision loss. The patient is asked to identify and grasp objects of various shapes, enabling a precise assessment of recognition abilities tailored to everyday situations. Thanks to this immersive approach, the tool ensures fast, reliable, and reproducible testing while allowing for precise control of experimental parameters.
1. An innovative virtual reality solution
Like MOST-VR and VR-ViSA, SPOT is a virtual reality-based test designed to measure object recognition and grasping performance. In fully controlled virtual environments, the patient is required to locate and grasp targets of various shapes, allowing for a detailed assessment of their abilities. Virtual reality enables precise adjustment of luminance and contrast, ensuring fast, reliable, and reproducible measurements while maintaining strict control over experimental parameters.
2. A flexible and sensitive tool
People with visual impairments face many daily challenges. The impact of their condition on everyday activities—known as functional vision—is often poorly documented. For example, they frequently struggle to identify objects in dimly lit or low-contrast environments.
SPOT offers a precise assessment of object recognition and grasping performance, allowing for a more detailed evaluation of functional vision. The test is available in several versions tailored to central or peripheral vision loss, including profound vision impairment.
3. A VR solution for global use
Virtual reality provides precise control over testing conditions — lighting, contrast, environment — ensuring fast, reliable, and reproducible assessments wherever they are conducted. SPOT is a ready-to-use solution: installation, validation, and training are completed in under four hours. The test will soon be deployed in 16 centers worldwide.
